i tred to upload the rough edit, but it did not work
Friendship
I think that during this project, Hartlee and I have become closer friends. I think that the amount of time we have spent together, our similar interests, thoughts and similar ideas has caused me to make a new friend. However, this assignment has also put Annie and I on thin paper for the past term. I think we are both too controlling and both want different things but don't want to give in to the other person. I think that this term, I worked better with Hartlee, than I did with Annie
Email from Annie:
As you may already know, our assignment is due next week.
In order for us to not be screwed, we have to film ASAP.
On the weekend, we will need to film:
Party scene
Rollerblading scene
Beach scene
And in cm today we will film the party invite scene.
I will ask for an extension if we need it, because we have to film the desk scene as well as the final scene in the boarding house
The desk scene will require a lot of props and preparation, including various books and stationery. We will also require printed photographs from the shots. I will bring in some of my own photos from when I was younger and stuff to fill in the album
We really need to get organized !
~Annie
It was really annoying how Annie just expected us to do what she says, but when we tell her to do something she doesn't do it either. I think if we all did what each other said, we would have been more inclined to help each other. She didn't really ask Hartlee or I what we were doing on the weekend, she just expected us to be there. It was really hard for me to film because as my exchange student was only here for two weekends, we had to cramp the whole of the Gold Coast and Brisbane into those two weekends.The weekend that we had to shoot was actually Lizzie's last free day in Australia, and she had to spent it filming with me. I don't think that Annie understood or cared that it was her last weekend, she still expected me to be there.
Organising to use the Boarding House
During class we talked to Mrs Chruchill about filming in the boarding house. She sent this email to Mrs Hutcheon, and everyting went smoothly when we filmed on the Monday afternoon.
Dear Mrs Hutcheon
Three daygirls (Hartlee Bonson, Anastasiia Kuzovin and Alisha Seeto) would like to film a scene in a spare boarding room in Whitby on Monday at 3.30pm.
Are you prepared to agree to this and supervise them at this time?
Many Thanks
Mrs Gayle Churchill
Communication
To communicate with each other outside of school, we created a Facebook group between Annie, Hartlee and I. Using this group, we made sure that everyone knew what we were doing and what they needed to bring each lesson. It was good communicating like this because all three of us could see everything that was happening.
Actors
During our film, we used Annie as Jade. For the other main character, Aimee, we couldn't decide who we wanted to play her. In the end we asked a couple of people who declined. We ended up using Ruby, but when it came to the day of filming, she got sick and couldn't film. We then had no person to be in the film which was one of the most important aspects of the scene. In such short notice, I convinced my exchange student, Lizzie, to act. Another character was the mother of Jade who was played by Hartlee. These are the only people that we had in our film (not including all the people walking past) I think that in some of the scenes, it would have been more realistic if we had more people in the foreground and background.
Reflection and Evaluation
2.Clarify any time-management issues your group encountered during the planning process and describe the steps you implemented to improve in this area;
We didn't really have a 'planning process' as it was done during the production stage. I think that we should have had a planning stage so that we would have been more organised. But in saying that, because we did in in the production stage, it was fresh in our minds and we couldn't go back and change anything which was good because we never all agreed on anything. It was also annoying that Hartlee or I would always be away and we couldn't always work as a group.
3.Discuss whether your group made effective use of the provided templates to assist the film-making process;
My group did not use the storyboards at all. For most of the filming stage, Annie had still not gotten them off Mr Andrews or drawn new ones. I think that the props list helped a lot and the shot list/scene list helped a lot because I like being organised and knowing what I need to do and how many films we have left. Putting everything in lists made it easier for me to organise in my head what we needed to do. Annie kept saying that she had done all of the lists – yet she never brought them to class, and I have never seen them. Hartlee and I did not add anything else to the film, but I think we should have because the film doesnt really have a climax.
4.Explain whether the planning process helped your group during filming. In particular, discuss whether the use of devices such as storyboards, shot-lists, and rough edits assisted throughout the filming process;
We did not have the storyboards or shot lists so that did not help. But knowing what props we needed at each scene and who was bringing them helped a lot. The rough edit helped me realise what shots and scenes didn't work and which ones we should have filmed better.
6.After reviewing your footage and completing the rough cut of your film, describe any aspects of your film, which need to be addressed. i.e does your group need to reshoot any scenes; are any additional shots required; are there any scenes which worked better than expected.
I think that our group needs to reshoot a couple of the scenes such as the cake scene, inside rollerblading scene and the corridor scene. This is because in the cake scene, I think that we cant use any of the footage, and when we were filming, we weren't really thinking of the shots we needed. We did not film the most important shot of the scene when Jade says 'I wish for a best friend'. This was all our faults for forgetting. The inside rollerblading scene needs to be reshot because the costume that Annie was wearing was different to what she wore in the actual rollerblading scene. In the corridor scene, I do not think that we can use any of the shots because if I was watching the shots in order I wouldn't know what the scene is about. Additionally, the lighting in the corridor scene is very dark, when the scene is suppose to be light because this is when we see that Jade's medication is finally working. Furthermore, I think that we should film some of the beach scenes again because some of them look really bad and unprofessional. However, if wanted to shoot those scenes again, we couldn't because the actor was my exchange student that filled in at the last minute and has gone back to New Zealand. I also think that we need to film more shots that go in between the scenes such as walking to places, Jade thinking and doing ordinary everyday things and establishing shots. When I was shooting the rollerblading scene, I honestly thought that we wouldn't be able to use any of it, but when I looked at it, it actually turned out really well. I like the transactions that I used in my rough cut in the rollerblading scene. The outside rollerblading scene is my favourite.
7.List any skills, techniques or tricks you have discovered during the project.
Some skills, techniques and tricks I have discovered during this project include how to use a camera, tripod and a little bit of MPEG Streamclip. I learnt how to use a tripod, and I now know what it actually means to pan (and what it looks like when I do it), tilt, using the legs and attactching the camera onto the stand. I've learnt how to concert videos into a setting that we can use in final cut. I think that I learnt more about camera angles, shots, lighting, the rule of thirds and all of the other filming techniques when I was actually in control of the camera. When I was using the camera, all of the techniques that we learnt last term made sense.
8.Discuss whether you undertook adequate and detailed reflection to throughout your project. Have you provided enough evidence to support your work? (Look back at your blogs/journals and think about whether it looks like 6 weeks worth of work).
I have not been keeping up with any reflections throughout the project. Instead of talking to my friends about what was going on, I should have written it down in my blog.
10.Would you like to change any aspects of your film?
I would not like to change my film
11.If you could start the project again what would you do differently?
If I were to start this project again, I would have planned better with shots lists of each scene and know exactly where I was going to shoot and what I was shooting. It was hard trying to tell Hartlee or Annie what to do because I didnt want to be mean and sound too controlling. I would have had actors that would actually turn up, and be there if we needed to shoot again.
